Matt began performing when he was 8 years old attending Imagination Theatre in Folkestone where he auditioned for roles in many West End musicals including Les Miserables, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Oliver. He performed locally in Imagination Theatre productions for years before eventually the school disbanded. Taking a break from performing he began learning the trombone and euphonium in his early secondary school years and took part in a school band tour in Germany. He began learning the electric and acoustic guitar in 2004 and took professional lessons until mid-2007 when he moved to Winchester to attend university. He studied English and Film Studies and graduated with a 2.1 in 2010. During university his guitar development took a backseat but upon finishing he continued to teach himself to play acoustic guitarĀ and citesĀ Bob Dylan, Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale and Johnny Flynn as his biggest influences.

In 2011 he performed live with his guitar for the first time with Abi Orfila at a local music event and in the following months Orfila was founded. During this formation he began learning to play the harmonica and began to rediscover and revitalise his vocals in order to provide the third part harmony inherent and instrumental in Orfila.
